Fire Extinguished After Oil Refinery Explosion Near Texas Coast/ TezzBuzz/ WASHINGTON/ J. Mansour/ Morning Edition/ Explosion at Texas refinery sparks large fire and smoke. Shelter-in-place order lifted after blaze contained. No injuries reported at major fuel production facility.
A large explosion at an oil refinery near the Texas Gulf Coast sparked a fire and prompted a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents before officials confirmed the blaze was extinguished Tuesday.
The explosion occurred Monday at the Valero refinery in Port Arthur, roughly 90 miles east of Houston. Thick smoke billowed into the air following the blast, which shook homes miles away, according to residents.
Port Arthur Mayor Charlotte M. Moses said no injuries were reported and all employees were accounted for following the incident.
Authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for parts of the city’s west side shortly after the explosion. The order was lifted Tuesday once officials confirmed the fire had been extinguished and air quality conditions improved.
Several schools in the surrounding area closed Tuesday as a precaution following the explosion. Emergency responders and environmental officials monitored conditions to ensure public safety.
Texas state Rep. Christian Manuel said the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality deployed air monitoring equipment and worked with local agencies to assess potential environmental risks.
The Port Arthur refinery employs about 770 workers and can process approximately 435,000 barrels of oil per day, according to company information. The facility refines heavy crude oil into gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, making it a significant part of the region’s energy infrastructure.
Images and videos shared online showed flames and a large plume of smoke rising from the refinery shortly after the explosion.
Valero did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Local media reported that a company spokesperson confirmed all workers were safe.
The explosion comes as energy markets remain sensitive amid rising global fuel prices linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting oil supply.
Officials continue investigating the cause of the explosion.
