LPG Cylinders: The situation regarding LPG gas in the country is gradually evolving. The ongoing tensions in the Gulf nations have now begun to impact India's gas supply as well. Consequently, the government and oil companies are jointly implementing new regulations to ensure that gas supplies continue to reach every household without disruption. If you are an LPG cylinder user, you must be aware of these new rules.
How many cylinders can be booked in a month?
According to the new regulations set by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), a standard consumer is permitted to book a maximum of two domestic LPG cylinders per month. If a consumer attempts to procure more than this limit, the system may block the booking, or additional verification procedures may be initiated.
How many cylinders are allocated per year?
The government allocates 12 subsidized cylinders per financial year (spanning from April 1st to March 31st). In addition to this quota, consumers may purchase up to three non-subsidized cylinders if the need arises. Thus, a total of up to 15 cylinders can be booked within a single year.
Increased Waiting Period Between Bookings
Previously, a second cylinder could be booked just 21 days after the first one; however, this waiting period has now been extended to 25 days. This implies that you will have to wait slightly longer before you can book your next cylinder. Furthermore, having an updated KYC (Know Your Customer) profile is now mandatory for booking an LPG cylinder. If your KYC details are incomplete or pending, you may encounter difficulties during the booking process, or your request may even be rejected.
BPCL's New Process
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has introduced a new system for booking additional cylinders. If you have already exhausted your annual quota of 12 cylinders but still wish to book more, you will be required to provide certain essential information. To do this, you must utilize the 'Hello BPCL' mobile application. The app will prompt you to answer a series of questions, such as:
How many members reside in your household?
Is there a family function, wedding, or special event taking place at your home?
What is the estimated number of guests expected?
Based on your responses to these questions, a determination will be made regarding whether or not you are eligible to receive an additional cylinder.
Changes to Cylinder Quantity Possible
Furthermore, according to a report published in *The Economic Times*, in light of the gas shortage, consideration is being given to reducing the gas content in the standard 14.2 kg cylinders to approximately 10 kg. If this measure is implemented, the price is also likely to decrease proportionately.
Why Are These Changes Taking Place?
It is worth noting that India meets a significant portion of its gas requirements through imports, with the majority of these supplies originating from the Gulf nations. Ongoing tensions in that region are disrupting supply chains. Consequently, the government is taking these steps to ensure that gas remains accessible to the entire population. Therefore, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with these regulations and plan your gas bookings accordingly.
