In April 2025, Bluesky raised $100 million in a Series B funding round, led by Bain Capital Crypto, with participation from Alumni Ventures, Anthos Capital, Bloomberg Beta, Knight Foundation, and True Ventures. Since then, their focus has been on scaling the team to match the meteoric growth of AT Protocol (atproto) and the Bluesky App.

This next phase is a shift in the way they build and lead. Jay Graber, the founder of Bluesky, is now the Chief Innovation Officer. This is where she is now focused on the future of open social infrastructure. This enables the broader team to scale the operation while maintaining direction on product and protocol design.

The growth of the company since  Series A in October 2024 has been steady and linear. At the time, Bluesky had 13 million users. Today, the platform reaches over 43 million people worldwide. Thei growth is a result of user demand and the strength of underlying protocol.

The State of the AT Protocol Ecosystem

At the same time, the ecosystem surrounding atproto, which they call the Atmosphere, has grown in a meaningful way. The Atmosphere includes developers, apps, and users that build and interact with the protocol. The Atmosphere is not just one app. Instead, it’s a number of tools and services that work together through a shared infrastructure.

There are over a thousand apps being used every week, which are built on the atproto protocol. The range of apps varies from social feeds to specific communities, as well as developer tools. This indicates that developers see value in an open system where they can build without specific platform limitations.

There’s also been an increase in developer interest in the protocol. The company now see over 400,000 SDK downloads per month. The fact that this number remains constant indicates that developers are not only exploring the protocol but also building products on top of it.

The data layer has grown as well. The Atmosphere now contains 20 billion public records. These include things like posts, likes, comments, and other interactions. Collectively, they provide a significant window into how people are using open networks in their lives.

Bluesky Secures New Funding to Scale Open Social Infrastructure

This new funding allows us to continue building without changing their approach. The approach is still to create open, user-controlled social infrastructure. The goal is to give people more control over their data, their identity, and their online experience.

Blueksy will be using this funding to grow their team, improve the core technology, and continue improving the ecosystem. This includes things like performance improvements, moderation tools, and developer support. This also includes improving the protocol to make it easier to use and more reliable at scale.

The hope is that open systems have the potential for a wide variety of online communities. They help users move between applications while preserving their identity and information. They help developers innovate and try new things without having to build everything from scratch again.

Celebrating The Progress and the Road Ahead

What Bluesky has accomplished so far is the result of many people’s efforts. Developers have created new applications and tools. Creators have contributed content and helped define the culture of the platform. Users have helped build the system and grow the network. These people and their contributions have helped build the Atmosphere.

This is the beginning of a new era in the growth of the system. The tools are stronger, the network is larger, and the activity in the system is growing. There is much more to build, and the firm is excited for what is next.

The goal remains steady progress, supporting the community that makes this system work, and building toward a more open social web where people have more choice and power.
