New Delhi: Vinicius Junior’s brace enabled Real Madrid to come from behind to beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a pulsating Spanish capital derby and keep them within four points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.


The match was an end to end affair with stunning goals and straight red card to Real captain Federico Valverde that reduced the home side to 10 men in the closing minutes of the match.


Ademola Lookman put Atletico in front in the 33rd minute, finishing a slick counter-attack, capitalising on a backheel from Giuliano Simeone.


Vinicius briught Real level with a penalty on 52 minutes after David Hancko tripped Brahim Diaz and three minutes later Valverde exploited a Jose Maria Gimenez error to make it 2-1.


Nahuel Molina’s booming 30-yard strike briefly sileneced the Bernabeu stadium in the 66th minute, but Vinicius had the last laugh as his solo effort six minutes later win it for Real.


Valverde was later given his amrching orders for a challenge on Alex Baena while Julian Alvarez struck the post as Atletico’s push didn’t yield any result.


“Real Madrid always come out on top,” Vinicius told Real Madrid TV.


“I’m very pleased with the performance we put in today. We were in control from the start; we conceded a goal, but we kept our cool and did what we had to do so our fans could go home happy with another win.”


“I have worked hard all season for games like this. I don’t know why, but when this time of the season arrives the goals and assists just flow,” the Braziliam added.


“Another great game by Vini, it was an example of his character, his talent. It was a great goal that gave us a win in a difficult moment. I am lucky to have him on my team. We remain in the league fight. Mission accomplished,” Real coach Alvaro Arbeloa said.


“We could have done more in attack, and hopefully that can serve us for important games ahead,” Atletico coach Diego Simeone said.
