A stunning European island with amazing beaches and fascinating history is an attractive 21C in April. While Brits recover from a gloomy and wet winter, where it rained for a significant number of days throughout the start of 2026, many are planning sunny getaways to enjoy a bit of heat, good food and fun by the sea. One of the best places to do that is this historic island with direct flights from the UK for as little as £36.

The island is Sicily, located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, and it is arguably one of the most serene and historically rich islands inEurope. Direct flights operate between Sicily's capital, Palermo, and airports in London, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh. According to TUI Holidays, Sicily can reach highs of 21C in April, with significantly hotter temperatures in later months, such as 25C in July and August.

While Palermo is one of the most popular spots on the island of Sicily, there are other, more underrated parts of the Italian island. For example, Ragusa doesn't get half as many tourists as the capital city, but still enjoys stellar views and delicious food.

Palermo, however, will likely be your first stop in Sicily. Among the best things to do here are walking tours, Sicilian cooking classes and day trips to see the island's iconic volcano, Mt. Etna.

Other highlights of Sicily include the smaller island of Ortiga, which makes for a wonderful day trip or overnight stay close to the main island.

There is also the Valley of the Temples, an archaeological site in Agrigento that is one of the most brilliant examples of Ancient Greek architecture. Whether you're looking for a history-filled trip or some fun in the sun, Sicily has plenty to offer.

For some sun-soaking by the sea, the best beaches in Sicily include San Vito Lo Capo, which is famous for its white sands. There is also Scala dei Turchi, Cala Rossa and Isola Bella, to name a few.

People who have visited Sicily have had amazing things to say about it, praising its cultural history, architecture and food. One Reddit user shared: "The island is beautiful, with great landscapes and so many history, and it offers a bit of everything: mountains, beaches, nature, walks. So there's always something to do!"

They continued: "The weather, at least in June is hot, but great to go to the beach, enjoy a sunset, have a walk in the morning, or just sit in a terrace at the shadow having a cold drink, which most Sicilians seem to do after lunch."

Another shared: "Just got back from Sicily and I'm honestly in love with the place. The beaches, the food, the small towns, everything is so good. Can't wait to go back and explore even more hidden spots."

A third said: "I love Sicily and have been there many times especially to the mountain town of Mineo in the south. To me it's less accessible than Spain / Greek islands etc for lots of reasons language, beach infrastructure etc, but once you accept that, the people and place are beautiful and shine through. I much prefer it to Spain and other more popular destinations."

While Sicily is one of the hottest European islands in April, it doesn't sit at the top of the list in terms of temperature. Hotter islands include the Canary Islands and Malta, which tend to be a few degree hotter.
