Ajit Agarkar: After the historic victory of Team India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, a unique demand has come to the fore from the chief selector of the Indian team, Ajit Agarkar. According to reports, Agarkar has requested the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to extend his tenure.

What demand did Ajit Agarkar place?

According to Times of India reports, Agarkar’s current tenure is till June 2026, but he has sought to extend it till the 2027 ODI World Cup. During his tenure, the Indian team has performed tremendously in limited overs cricket. India has proved its strength by consistently winning major ICC tournaments, including the recent victory in the T20 World Cup 2026.

The selection committee under the leadership of Agarkar has strengthened the team by creating a balance between young and experienced players. This is the reason why Team India has achieved continuous success in the last few years. In such a situation, the board also wants to maintain stability in the selection process, especially when preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup have started.

Earlier also tenure extended for one year

The Indian team won three ICC titles one after the other during the tenure of Ajit Agarkar, which includes the victory of T20 World Cup 2024, Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026. After this, BCCI had extended Agarkar’s tenure by one year as a reward before IPL 2025. Now Agarkar has expressed his desire to handle the responsibility till the upcoming ODI World Cup.

Challenges in test cricket

During Agarkar’s tenure, India has achieved historic success by performing brilliantly in white ball cricket, while the team has had to face challenges in Test cricket. During his tenure, India won the 2023 and 2025 Asia Cup titles. But during this period the team had to lose two consecutive series in red ball cricket.
