With the summer season in full swing—and Chaitra Navratri just around the corner—a chilled fruit custard makes for the perfect treat. Delicious in taste and packed with nutrients, this recipe is sure to be a hit with everyone, from guests to children.
Make Fruit Custard at Home This Summer
As summer begins, people naturally start craving food and drinks that are both cool and light. Coinciding with this, the auspicious festival of Chaitra Navratri is set to begin in a few days—a time when people observe fasts and prefer to consume light, nutritious meals. In such times, fruit custard emerges as an excellent choice, striking a perfect balance between great taste and good health. Not only does it provide a cooling effect to the body, but it is also light on the stomach and easy to digest.
Navratri is Approaching: Fruit Custard is the Ideal Dish
The best part about fruit custard is that you can prepare it very easily right at home. It requires no special culinary skills and takes very little time to make. This delicious dish can be whipped up using just a few simple ingredients typically found in any home kitchen. If unexpected guests drop by, you can quickly prepare and serve this dessert to delight everyone.
Ingredients Required for Preparation
The primary ingredients used to prepare this dish are milk, custard powder, and fresh seasonal fruits. You can add fruits such as apples, pomegranates, kiwis, and grapes. Additionally, if you have fruits like mangoes, bananas, or papayas on hand, you can certainly include those as well. To enhance the flavor, ingredients like cashews, sugar, and honey are also added, making the taste truly exquisite.
First Step: Slice All the Fruits Thinly
The process of making fruit custard begins with preparing the fruits. First, thoroughly wash all the fruits and cut them into small pieces. Cut the grapes in half, and separate the pomegranate seeds, placing them in a bowl. Ensure that the fruits are fresh and clean, as this will enhance the flavor of the custard even further. Completing this preparatory step in advance makes the subsequent process much easier.
Now, place the milk on the stove to boil.
It is now time to prepare the milk base. Pour the majority of the milk into a pot, place it on the stove to boil, and add sugar to taste. Separately, set aside half a cup of cold milk and mix the custard powder into it to create a smooth slurry. Ensure there are absolutely no lumps in this mixture, as this is key to achieving a smooth custard consistency.
Once the milk boils, add the custard mixture.
When the milk comes to a rolling boil, slowly pour in the custard slurry. While pouring, stir continuously with a spoon and keep the flame on low heat. This prevents the custard from sticking to the bottom of the pot and ensures a perfectly thick and creamy texture. In approximately 5 to 7 minutes, the milk will thicken, and the custard will be ready.
Transfer the custard to a bowl and let it cool.
Now, transfer the prepared custard into a bowl and allow it to cool down. To prevent a skin (cream layer) from forming on the surface, place the bowl in a larger container filled with cold water and stir the custard occasionally. Once the custard has cooled completely, add all the pre-cut fruits and mix everything together thoroughly. Afterward, place the bowl in the refrigerator for about 45 minutes to allow the custard to set properly and chill thoroughly.
Now, mix in the fruits and serve.
Once the fruit custard has chilled and is ready, garnish the top with pomegranate seeds or cashews before serving. It is not only visually appealing but tastes even more delicious than it looks. Children, in particular, absolutely love this dessert and devour it with great enthusiasm. In this way, you can enjoy a healthy, tasty, and refreshing dessert right at home during the summer months.
