Bleeding gums are often blamed on brushing too hard or poor dental hygiene. However, one health expert says the symptom could also point to a common vitamin deficiency.

Dr Eric Berg, who has more than 2.3 million followers and over 30 million likes on TikTok, recently highlighted the issue in a viral video. In the clip he told viewers: “Bleeding gums is classic vitamin C deficiency.”

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a nutrient the body needs to keep tissues healthy and support the immune system. According to the NHS, it also plays a key role in protecting cells, maintaining healthy skin and helping wounds heal.

The vitamin is essential for the production of collagen, a protein that helps keep gums, skin and blood vessels strong. Research cited by National Institutes of Health explains that without enough vitamin C, collagen cannot form properly, which can lead to fragile gums that bleed easily.

Severe vitamin C deficiency can lead to scurvy, a condition once common among sailors on long voyages. According to NHS, early symptoms include bleeding gums, fatigue, joint pain and slow wound healing.

Vitamin C is found naturally in many fruits and vegetables. The British Dietetic Association says some of the richest sources include oranges, strawberries, peppers, broccoli and tomatoes.

Because the body cannot store large amounts of vitamin C, it must be consumed regularly through food. According to the National Institutes of Health, the recommended daily intake for adults is around 75 to 90 milligrams.

A lack of vitamin C can weaken the body’s connective tissues. The Cleveland Clinic reports that this may lead to symptoms such as bleeding gums, easy bruising and rough or dry skin.

However, bleeding gums are not always caused by vitamin deficiencies. According to Mayo Clinic, gum disease, infections, certain medications and aggressive brushing can also trigger bleeding.

Dentists say persistent bleeding gums should not be ignored. Health experts recommend speaking to a dentist or GP if symptoms continue, as simple dietary changes or treatment may help resolve the underlying cause.

"My whole life is a deficiency," joked one user in the comment section on TikTok, while another agreed: "I'm deficient in everything." Reactions continued with a third saying: "Thank you for sharing this" and one more added: "I am the deficiency".

A fan replied: "Thanks for sharing this great information," followed by an additional reaction with one claiming: "Our food is not as nutritious as it used to be unfortunately". Lastly, a viewer warned: "Vitamin deficiency can wreck your health, I never gave it too much attention especially as you get older."
