New Delhi: Even fraudsters have started taking advantage of the ongoing LPG supply crisis in the country. Recently a woman in Greater Noida West was cheated of lakhs of rupees by them after being threatened about her LPG gas connection being cut. The incident has left locals stunned.
According to reports, 61-year-old Gujib Kalra, who lives in a housing society in Greater Noida West, received a call on her mobile phone. The caller identified himself as a workers of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL). He told the woman that her gas bill was pending. He threatened her saying that if she did not immediately pay the bill, then gas supply to her house would be disconnected.
Hearing the threat, the elderly lady panicked and believed what the caller had just told her. The caller then sent her a link on her mobile phone. He asked her to pay the bill through this link and prevent her gas supply from getting disrupted.
The woman followed the instruction and opened the link sent to her. Without much hesitation, the woman filled in all her bank details in the link, which led to the fraudsters getting easy access to her bank account. Taking advantage of the same, they looted Rs 21 lakh from her bank account.
Soon after getting the details, the fraudsters started making various transactions from her account. In just a few minutes, 11 transactions were made by them and a total of Rs 21 lakh was siphoned off from Kalra’s account.
After a short while, the woman started receiving messages from her bank, regarding the multiple transactions made from her account. It was only after receiving these messages that the woman realised that she had been cheated.
Guzib Kalra immediately contacted the cyber crime wing and the police, after realising the fraud. Following the calls, she also registered her complaint on the cyber portal.
The Cyber Crime Police have registered a case in the matter and have started an investigation. The police have registered the case against unknown cyber fraudsters and are trying to trace them. No money has been recovered so far, said an official.
