New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Sunday wrote to the floor leaders of the Lok Sabha expressing serious concern over the conduct of Members of Parliament and urging them to uphold the dignity of the House. The Speaker said recent incidents of protests and uproar inside the Chamber have undermined the dignity and prestige of parliamentary democracy.

The Speaker’s letter came shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had written to him, praising his patience, restraint and impartial approach. In his message, Modi said this reflected a new kind of political culture in the country. In his letter, the Prime Minister also expressed concern that some individuals, influenced by dynastic and feudal thinking, try to keep democratic institutions within their own control and are unwilling to accept new leadership.

Modi’s letter came days after the resolution moved by the Congress-led opposition for the removal of the Lok Sabha speaker from office was defeated in the House.

Birla raises concern over MPs’ conduct in Parliament

In his letter, Om Birla reminded leaders that Parliament is the country’s highest democratic institution and represents the aspirations of nearly 1.4 billion citizens. He said that as members of such an important institution, “our responsibility to maintain the dignity and prestige of all democratic institutions of the country becomes even greater”.

The Speaker explained his reason for writing the letter. He said, “This is not merely a formal communication. For some time now, the dignity and prestige of our parliamentary democracy have been undermined by some of our honourable members, both inside and outside the Parliament complex.”

Birla pointed out that the display of banners and placards, the language used during protests and the overall conduct of some MPs have become matters of concern. He urged leaders across parties to reflect seriously on the situation and work together to ensure that the dignity of Parliament is maintained at all times.

Budget Session to resume on Monday

The letter came during the Budget Session after both Houses of Parliament faced adjournment. The session will resume on Monday after a recess break.
