The Story of the Atonement Vrat

According to the story, in ancient times there was a beautiful forest named Chaitrarath. Being around that forest always felt like spring. Colorful flowers bloomed in the forest in every season. Sitting near this forest, a sage used to do penance, who was a devotee of Lord Shiva and was always engrossed in deep meditation. One day Chitrarath, king of the Gandharvas, reaches that forest with many of his nymphs.

One of those nymphs was named Manjughosha, whose eyes fell on the brilliant sage. Manjughosa decided to attract the sage through her beauty and melodious music. She sat at some distance from the sage and started playing the veena and singing melodious songs. At the same time Kamadeva also helped her in seducing the sage. Gradually, sage Medhavi’s mind gets disturbed after seeing the music and beauty of Manjughosa. He forgets his penance and starts living with her. Then time passed and they did not even realize it.

After a long time, Manjughosha asks sage Medhavi for permission to return to heaven. Only then does the sage realize that 57 years have passed. Knowing this he becomes very angry. He cursed Manjughosa that she would become a vampire. Manjughosha becomes very sad after hearing the curse and tries to apologize to the sage. He requested several times to be told some solution to free himself from this curse. After some time, sage Medhavi’s anger subsides. Then he said that if she observes a fast on Papmochani Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra month, she will be freed from this curse.

According to the belief of Hindu religion, the person who observes this fast with full devotion and listens to its story, gets the blessings of Lord Vishnu. The troubles of life go away and the person also gets freedom from sins committed unknowingly.
