The Waterfront has become one of the newest and most popular crime dramas on the streaming service, showcasing the Buckley family’s fight within a coastal North Carolina community as they try to sustain their fishing empire through their family’s buried family secrets, threats of violence from the criminal underbelly, and southern drama. With Season 1 concluding with an intense cliffhanger, numerous emotional moments, and viewers excitedly looking toward Season 2 in 2025, fans were surely expecting to see the same type of relatable chaos, heartfelt betrayals, family-on-family conflict, and real-life suspense in the second season.
Netflix canceled the first season of The Waterfront in August 2025 after a single season. The show performed well during its first few weeks, topping Netflix’s most popular shows list several weeks in a row and getting millions of views; however, Netflix didn’t think those numbers justifies the cost of renewing the series primarily due to low completion rates (i.e., the amount of viewers finishing all 10 episodes) and due to viewership metrics that did not support continuation as well as Williamson’s original vision for a multi-season show.
Creator Kevin Williamson expressed his disappointment with the cancellation on social media but also thanked the cast and crew for their contributions to the show’s success.
There is no Season 2 release date, as the series has been officially canceled. No plans for revival on another platform have been confirmed.
The main cast from Season 1 included:
– Dead McCallany as Harlan Buckley
– Maria Bello as Belle Buckley
– Melissa Benoist as Bree Buckley
– Jake Weary as Cane Buckley
Other notable actors appeared in supporting roles. Since the show was canceled, none of the cast is set to return for further episodes.
Season 1 of the series focused on the Buckley family as they worked together to stop their waterfront business from being destroyed by criminal elements, deadbeat relatives, and hostile outsiders. The season culminated with a dramatic conclusion (never before had a Williamson series ended with so many unresolved things, including Sinclair’s trademark cliff-hangers), leading to a lot of confusion about the future direction of the show. Williamson has already regaled us with info about what to expect in the future (at least through 3 full seasons), including the exploration of family dynamics, continued escalation of crime, and a Southern Gothic feel to the story lines.
However, due to the cancellation of the show, the various plot threads that Williamson initiated remain unresolved; no formal plans for season 2 have been disclosed as of this time; and the only information available is speculation about discussions prior to cancellation.
For the fans of the Bucks, Season 1 is still available on Netflix, providing them with the opportunity to experience an entire (albeit abbreviated) storyline. Although there has been a great deal of excitement surrounding the show before its cancellation, as of last week, it appears that the decision made by Netflix to cancel Buckley has been made and will not be changed.
