  • 1/2 cup toor dal

  • 1/4 cup masoor dal

  • 1 medium sized onion (finely chopped)

  • 2 tomatoes (finely chopped)

  • 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste

  • 2 green chillies (chopped)

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

  • 1 tsp red chilli powder

  • 1 tsp coriander powder

  • salt as per taste

  • 2 tbsp ghee or oil

  • 1 tsp cumin

  • 1/2 tsp mustard

  • 3-4 garlic cloves (chopped)

  • 1 dry red chilli

  • 1 tsp garam masala

  • Green coriander (for garnish)


How to make Dal Tadka


Making Dhaba style dal tadka is very simple. For this, first of all wash toor dal and masoor dal thoroughly. After this, add lentils, turmeric, salt and about 2 cups of water in the cooker and cook till 3-4 whistles. When the dal is cooked well, mash it lightly so that its consistency becomes creamy.


Heat ghee or oil in a pan. Now add cumin and mustard seeds and let it crackle. After this add chopped onion and fry until it turns golden. Then add ginger-garlic paste and green chillies and cook for a few seconds.


Now add chopped tomatoes and cook them until they melt well. After this, add red chilli powder, coriander powder and a little salt and fry the spices for 3-4 minutes.


When the masala is cooked well, add boiled lentils to it. Add some water as per requirement and let the dal cook on low flame for 5-7 minutes so that the flavor of the spices gets mixed well in the dal. Finally add garam masala and mix well.


Now heat ghee in a small pan. Add chopped garlic and dry red chilli and fry till it turns golden. When the aroma of garlic starts coming, then pour this tempering on hot dal. Garnish by adding green coriander on top.


Serve Dhaba Style Dal Tadka with hot roti, naan, tandoori roti or steamed rice. Its spicy taste and aroma increases the pleasure of eating manifold.
