New Delhi, March 10. Many important proposals were approved in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. During this, the ongoing tension in West Asia was also discussed. According to sources, in the cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi directed the ministers and ministries to work together so that the ongoing conflict in West Asia has minimal impact on the citizens of the country. He also directed all important ministries to ensure full preparedness for any possible challenge.

Jal Jeevan Mission in December, 2028 approval to extend up to

The Union Cabinet has approved extension of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) till December 2028. Giving information about important decisions taken in the cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that the government has approved increasing the total budget of Jal Jeevan Mission to Rs 8.7 lakh crore. The scheme was earlier approved for the period 2019 to 2024. Till now, under this scheme, drinking water connections through taps have been provided to about 12.6 crore rural houses of the country.

Ashwini Vaishnav said that the Central Government has also issued new instructions regarding the implementation of ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’, so that now the focus can be on better service delivery instead of just creating infrastructure. Under this, separate MoUs will be signed with the states within three months so that structural reforms can be ensured.

Madurai Airport gets international status

The Union Cabinet has also approved the proposal to declare Madurai Airport as an international airport. Madurai already operates international flights to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Colombo and several airlines have shown interest in expanding international services from here. According to the government, Madurai airport has all the infrastructure required for international flight operations, including customs notification, immigration check facility, health and quarantine arrangements.

The decision will ease access to major religious places in the area such as Meenakshi Amman Temple, Koodal Azhagar Temple, Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple, Palamoodhir Cholai Murugan Temple and Rameshwaram Temple. The government believes that this step will give a boost to industries like automobile, rubber, chemical and granite. Besides, the identity of Madurai city as an important educational and healthcare center will also be strengthened.

IBC And approval of amendments in the Company Act

Apart from this, the Cabinet has approved amendments in the Insolvency Law and Company Law. According to sources, the Cabinet has given green signal to several changes in the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016 and the Companies Act, 2013. However, the detailed details of these amendments could not be immediately revealed. Both laws are enforced by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. In August last year, the ministry had introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha to amend the IBC, in which several important changes were proposed.

These also include provisions to reduce the time taken to accept applications filed for insolvency resolution. This bill was later sent to a select committee of the Lok Sabha, which also submitted its report in December 2025. Last month, Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs Nirmala Sitharaman had said that the government is planning to introduce the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the second phase of the budget session. The second phase of the budget session of Parliament has started from Monday (9 March).
