New Delhi: A woman from Rajasthan has become the centre of a legal dispute after two men from different states claimed her as their wife and filed petitions in separate high courts.
Jitendra Singh, a resident of Didwana in Rajasthan, has moved the Rajasthan high court’s Jodhpur bench, claiming the woman, Shakila, is his legally wedded wife. In his petition, Jitendra said he met Shakila while working in Punjab’s Firozpur and the two married on February 16, 2025. He submitted documents related to the marriage before the court.
However, complications arose when Shakila’s family later filed a missing person complaint, following which police took both of them to Jammu. Jitendra told the court that he was released based on Shakila’s statement, but she was not allowed to return with him. He further claimed that Shakila’s phone has been switched off for the past few months.
Meanwhile, Shabbir Ahmad Khan from Kashmir has also filed a petition in the Srinagar high court, claiming that Shakila is his wife. Shabbir presented a Nikahnama, mentioning that he had married Shakila on June 12, 2024.
Shabbir has also told the court that Shakila faces a threat to her life from her parental family. Taking note of the petition, the Srinagar high court has issued directions to the police over her safety.
Acting on directions from the Rajasthan high court, police teams, assisted by the CRPF, conducted searches in several parts of Kashmir to locate Shakila, but could not trace her.
The Rajasthan high court is scheduled to hear Jitendra’s petition again on Tuesday, while the Srinagar high court will take up the matter on March 13.
