In a one-sided affair, New Zealand surrendered against India in the high-stakes final of the 2026 T20 World Cup, losing the match by 96 runs. This also marked their second consecutive defeat against India in two consecutive ICC white-ball tournaments; they had lost to India in the finals of the Champions Trophy last year.
New Zealand might be a consistent team, delivering bigger than their potential sometimes, but they have been unfortunate in most of the occasions in the ICC knockouts, especially how they have lost their two ICC white-ball tournaments against India. It was really not easy for the Kiwis to soak up the emotions, especially when they performed consistently throughout the tournament and lost just one match on an unfortunate day.
In an emotional video going viral on social media, New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips and spinner Ish Sodhi were seen being comforted by their wives after losing the T20 World Cup final on Sunday. Despite giving their best when someone goes through a situation like this, they feel that emotional barrage. Often, it has been seen that players who are unable to control their emotions on the field after such a heartbreaking defeat are consoled by their wives. This emotional moment, including Glenn Phillips and Ish Sodhi, has been going viral on social media.

It was a phenomenal tournament for the BlackCaps in this edition of the T20 World Cup. They had lost just one league game in the group stages and had qualified for the semi-finals with just one victory in their Super Eight campaign due to the net run-rate. They delivered their best in the semi-final, thrashing South Africa in the first semi-final–the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
Tim Seifert and Finn Allen were their standout batters in the tournament; the duo scored 326 and 298 runs in their 8 innings. While Rachin Ravindra was their best bowler, scalping 12 wickets in 7 innings. He had added 10 wickets in his last four innings.
