Carnival Cruise Line is putting an end to an "absolutely bonkers" social-media trend on board, which has seen passengers dragging beds or bedding onto cabin balconies. The major international cruise line, known primarily for Caribbean cruises, but also operating in Alaska, Mexico, Europe and Australia, has warned that the practice poses serious safety risks and could result in hefty fines.
The cruise operator's brand ambassador, John Heald, announced the prohibition in a Facebook post on March 3, urging guests to stop the "absolutely bonkers act" immediately. While noting that the viral clip that is currently making the rounds on social media was not actually filmed on a Carnival ship, the cruise line still wanted to speak up before the trend spread to its own passengers. Mr Heald said moving the mattresses outdoors could block emergency exits, increase the risk of falls, damage furniture and linens, and violate hygiene rules by exposing bedding to outdoor elements.
Violators face penalties under Carnival's Code of Conduct, including warnings or fines up to $500 (£375), Mr Heald said.
Jokingly, the brand ambassador suggested offenders might be required to "work the rest of the cruise as a stateroom assistant making beds and cleaning cabins".
The trend has gained traction on platforms like TikTok, with videos showing passengers on other cruise lines relocating entire beds to balconies to enjoy ocean views or a night under the stars. One viral clip from a 2024 Antarctica voyage showed a guest sleeping outdoors in subfreezing temperatures, while a similar incident occurred on a Royal Caribbean ship last year.

A separate incident on a Carnival ship involved a passenger trying to move lounge chairs from a public deck into their cabin.
This comes as cruise ship passengers have been alerted to four behaviours that frustrate staff. This includes those leaving their cabins messy, flirting with crew, a lack of manners and those who have a tendency to show off their wealth in front of those less well-off.
