Mamata hits back at President Murmu, alleges BJP-scripted protocol ambush
08 Mar 2026
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has responded to President Droupadi Murmu's complaints about her treatment during a recent visit to the state.
Murmu had expressed dissatisfaction over being shifted from Bidhannagar to Goshaipur in Darjeeling, where the turnout was low.
She also questioned the absence of Banerjee and her ministers at a tribals-focused program where she was the chief guest.
What did Banerjee say
Event arrangements
In response, Banerjee said she and her ministers were not meant to be present as per the lineup approved by the President's Secretariat.
She added that the event was organized by a private organization, and documents do not mention Bidhannagar as the original location.
The Chief Minister also claimed that Siliguri district administration had informed the President's Secretariat about inadequate arrangements at Goshaipur ahead of Murmu's visit.
BJP accused of misusing Murmu
Political allegations
Banerjee further said that Murmu was received and seen off by local officials as per the pre-approved lineup.
She slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party for "disrespecting and misusing the highest chair in the country for its own party agenda."
Earlier, Banerjee had accused Murmu of acting on behalf of the BJP after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "shameful and unprecedented" remarks against her government.
Banerjee questions Murmu's frequent visits
Visit frequency
The Chief Minister also questioned the frequency of Murmu's visits during the election season.
"If you come once a year, I can welcome you. But, if you come repeatedly during election time, how is it possible for me to attend everything?" she asked.
She added that they shouldn't be expected to follow the President all the time like someone flying a kite.
