A question on The 1% Club resulted in 25 contestants being knocked out during Saturday evening's latest instalment.
The popular ITV quiz programme returned for series 5 episode 13 on Saturday night, 7 March, featuring 100 fresh participants vying for the grand prize of £100,000.
The show is fronted by comedian Lee Mack and challenges 100 new contestants weekly with brain-teasers that increase in complexity.
Beginning straightforward enough to be answered by 90% of the population, according to the programme's designers, the ultimate puzzle is designed to be solved by just the rare 1% of participants.
The 70% question stated: "Here is a table of jar lids and open jars. If you were to place the lids back on the jars, how many lids would be left over on the table?" The correct answer is three.
Nevertheless, the puzzle seemed to trip up numerous contestants, with Lee, 57, announcing that 25 players had been knocked out.
As the elimination buzzer for each contestant rang out across the studio, Lee quipped: "For a minute then, I was worried that wasn't going to stop and it was the shortest show we've ever had!
"We lost 25 people there, let's have a look at the answer... it's three! A lot of people went out on that one!"
By the episode's conclusion, contestant Zoe emerged victorious on The 1% Club after successfully solving the 1% question.
The puzzle asked: "What word is represented by the times on the clocks below?" with five clocks displaying 12pm, 1am, 2pm, 5pm and 12am. After correctly identifying "label" as the answer, relating to the position of each letter in the alphabet corresponding with the hour number, Zoe bagged an astounding £97,000.
The stunned contestant exclaimed: "Oh my God!"
Twitter, now X, was soon abuzz with viewers expressing their struggle with the final question. One user posted: "No because the question was impossible!"
Another account commented: "Nah couldnt guess the last question" whilst a different viewer noted: "No. The explanation was too quick. I wish more time was allocated to explaining the answer to the 1% question, as it's always the most tricky, but the explanation is always rushed."
The 1% Club airs each Saturday night on ITV and ITV X.
