Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer had differing opinions on George Dobson's red card in Wrexham's defeat by Chelsea in the FA Cup. Dobson was dismissed after a VAR review in the 93rd minute and Chelsea made their numerical advantage count by scoring twice in extra time to win 4-2.

The Wrexham midfielder was initially shown a yellow card after bringing down Alejandro Garnacho to prevent a Chelsea break late in normal time. But referee Peter Bankes was sent over to the pitchside monitor by VAR Paul Howard and upgraded the card to a red.

Dobson caught the Chelsea winger on the shin and his challenge was deemed to be forceful and therefore endangering his opponent. There was much debate about the call on the BBC's coverage.

“It is the right decision,” ex-Wrexham defender Ben Tozer said. “Listen, he has to make the foul because he is thinking I need to delay the play and take a sensible yellow card. Unfortunately, he catches (him) and Wayne actually thought it was a good tackle, which I found ironic. He has to foul him but it is a red card. His studs have gone into the side of his shin. For me, it is a red card.”

However, asked if he felt a yellow card would have been the correct call, Rooney said: “Yeah, I think so. It is a little bit high and that is about it. It is not a straight leg and full studs going into him. I’m not too sure.”

Tozer then said: “It is like a dark orange, isn’t it? It is one of them, if it happens on you, you are absolutely fuming.” Rooney concluded: “I’m still not sure. I don’t think it is red.”

Reacting to the decision on commentary, Alan Shearer said: “It is hard to argue against it. You cannot have any complaints.”

That mixed verdict continued post-match when both managers were asked for their opinion. "It's our first taste of VAR, but I thought it had to be clear and obvious for the decision to be changed," Wrexham's Phil Parkinson told TNT Sports. "Dobbo has gone in with force, the ref is in a good position to see it, he's scraped his skin and caught him lower down. I think he could easily have just kept it as a yellow and, in my opinion, I don't think the VAR should have intervened in that.

"I think anyone who watches it will think it's a tight call and if it's a tight call you should stick with the original decision. So, yeah, a first taste at the Racecourse Ground of VAR and obviously it hurts that it's such an influence tonight."

Liam Rosenior felt the right decision was reached. "It's dangerous," he said. "I don't ever want to see a player sent off but, for me, Ale could have been really badly injured from that challenge so they're the challenges that you don't want to see."
