YouTube Direct Messaging: The world’s largest video platform Youtube has rolled out a major update for its users. The company has restarted its in-app direct messaging feature. Currently, this feature has been rolled out in 31 countries in Europe. With this new move, YouTube will no longer be just a platform for watching videos, but will also act as a social media messaging app. This means that users will now be able to send messages, share videos, and chat with their friends right inside the YouTube app.

So far, people have been able to share the video WhatsApp or Instagram Like used to use the app. However, this new feature may reduce this need significantly.

Why is YouTube’s new messaging feature special?

It is common to copy the link of a funny video on YouTube and send it to other apps. But now, YouTube wants to be a one-stop place to watch and talk about videos. For this, the company has introduced the feature to share videos, shorts and live streams directly with friends inside the app. With this feature, users can chat, react to videos, send emojis and enhance conversations. To start a chat, users need to send an invite link. If the other person accepts the link within 7 days, both users will be connected. They can then join both one-on-one and group chats.

Which users will get this feature

YouTube has also set some conditions for using this feature.

  • First of all, this feature will be available only to users who are 18 years of age or older. For this, age verification is necessary on their Google account.

  • Additionally, direct messages cannot be sent to any user. First an invite link has to be sent, and the chat will start only if the other person accepts it within 7 days.

  • To use this feature, users must be logged in to YouTube and have their own channel.

New service started in these countries

Currently, YouTube has launched this feature in 31 European countries, including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Sweden. However, tech experts believe that it can also be launched in big markets like India and the United States in the future.

The feature was discontinued in 2019, now it is back again

The interesting thing is that YouTube used to offer a similar messaging feature earlier also. But, the company gradually discontinued it and completely closed it after 2019. Now, considering the increasing user demand and competition from platforms like Instagram and TikTok, YouTube has decided to bring back this feature in a new and more secure form. This will save users from the hassle of switching between different apps again and again, which can save both time and mobile data.
