Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko has caught the eye with some impressive recent performances but that is unlikely to come as a shock to captain Bruno Fernandes. Summer recruit Sesko needed a bit of time to settle at Old Trafford but has found the net six times in his previous eight league matches as United have breathed new life into their Champions League charge.

Slovenian international Sesko arrived from RB Leipzig as the Red Devils splashed the cash over the summer, with Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Senne Lammens also moving to Old Trafford for eight-figure sums. Ruben Amorim didn't pile the pressure on Sesko too early, easing him into a line-leading role before seeing successor Michael Carrick help the striker find another level.

The 22 year old scored just twice before the turn of the year but currently averages a goal for every 162.5 minutes on the pitch in the Premier League. In October, Fernandes indicated Sesko was still adapting but predicted an uptick wasn't too far away - something which has proven true.

"Ben is very eager to learn and that's very good from someone that has done very well in the Bundesliga and everything, came with the biggest, probably like the price tag and everything," the skipper stated. "But in his mind, he's like, I want to learn, I want to become better.

"Then on the weekends, he transforms himself into a different person on the pitch. He's someone that is like, 'I know what I have to do. I want to score goals, I'm going to get into the box, I'm going to get into duels. I'm going to win my headers'. And that's very important for us."

Sesko's recent scoring streak began just days after Amorim was sacked as he bagged a brace against Burnley under caretaker boss Darren Fletcher. He also found the net in Fletcher's other match in the dugout, a 2-1 FA Cup loss at home to Brighton.

The forward was named amongst the substitutes for the first game of Carrick's current spell, a victory against Manchester City, before impressing as a substitute in the following weeks.

He scored three times in a run of five substitute outings - against Fulham, West Ham and Everton - before starting and netting in the home triumph over Crystal Palace. Sesko wasn't able to keep that run going in the midweek loss to Newcastle but caretaker manager Carrick spoke ahead of the match about how impressed he has been by the recent displays.

"I think it's pretty clear [his confidence], we've all seen it. He's gradually building since he came to the club and over the season," Carrick told TNT Sports.

"That's part of learning and developing and getting used to being around different environments. Confidence as a striker, scoring goals helps massively but his performances away from that and how he's improving all the time is exactly what we'd hoped and what he hoped when he came to the club."
