"Jab Khuli Kitaab" is a family comedy-drama film. It tells the story of a couple at the end of their lives. The aging couple is fighting not to save their marriage but to get a divorce. The film is an adaptation of director Saurabh Shukla's theater play of the same name, which he wrote and directed. He himself played the lead role on stage. In that play, he was accompanied by Iravati Harshe Mahadev. The film stars Pankaj Kapur and Dimple Kapadia.
Story
The story centers on Gopal (Pankaj Kapur) and Anusuya (Dimple Kapadia). Anusuya suddenly regains consciousness after a two-year coma. She slowly begins to return to life. Initially, everything seems normal, but one day, she reveals a fifty-year-old truth to Gopal. This revelation shakes the foundation of their long-standing relationship. This revelation shatters Gopal to the core. He feels he's lived a lifelong relationship based on a lie and lived in deception all these years. Driven by this anger and heartbreak, he decides to divorce at an advanced age.
This leads to turmoil in the household, and the children become embroiled. During the divorce process, Gopal meets lawyer R.K. Negi (Aparshakti Khurana). The conversation in his office is one of the most captivating parts of the film. Gopal's age-old wounds are revealed, and Anusuya's truth is gradually revealed. This journey, which began with divorce, ultimately leads to a new understanding. Instead of a broken relationship, it begins to transform.
Acting
The film's strongest aspect is its acting. Pankaj Kapoor embodies his character's brokenness, resentment, and confusion with utmost sincerity in every scene. His performance is both calm and deeply poignant. Dimple Kapadia, as Anusuya, beautifully portrays all four emotions: dignity, regret, courage, and tenderness. The chemistry between the two isn't romantic. It feels like a long-standing, tired, yet deep partnership, which becomes the soul of the film. Supporting cast members Samir Soni, Nauheed Cyrusi, and Mansi Parekh also play their respective roles with sincerity.
Direction
Speaking of direction, Saurabh Shukla presents the film with a theatrical authenticity. Many scenes revolve around conversations where two people are just sitting and talking. The story progresses through these conversations. The film remains light and engaging in the first half, but the pace clearly slows down in the second half. Some emotional scenes are so long that the film feels like a stage play. In many places, the depth of the characters and their conflicts don't feel real. The film also becomes boring at times.
Negative Points
The film's pace is inconsistent throughout. The story falters at times. Some scenes drag on unnecessarily. The theatrical feel doesn't connect easily with everyone. The screenplay also lacks grip. At times, the transitions between emotional and comic scenes feel a bit abrupt. Nevertheless, the authenticity of the relationships and the honesty of the characters make the film worth watching.
Watch or Not
'Jab Khuli Kitaab' is a film that unflinchingly depicts the realities of aging relationships. There's no over-dramatization or artificial sweetness. This film won't appeal to everyone. However, those who enjoy films that focus on dialogue, slowly unfolding stories, and human error will find it quite honest. The actors' excellent work and genuine emotions support the film. However, its slow pace and somewhat fragmented screenplay prevent it from achieving its full impact.
