Rabat. Morocco national football team head coach Walid Regragui resigned from his post on Thursday. He has taken this decision a few months before the FIFA World Cup 2026. There was speculation about his future for the last several weeks, after which he decided to step down. Regragui cited fatigue as the reason for his resignation.
Regragui, 50, led Morocco to a historic semi-final at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This was the best performance by any African country so far in the World Cup. Apart from this, in January this year, he also took the team to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, where Morocco had to face defeat against Senegal.
According to media reports, now Mohammed Ouhbi can take command of the Moroccan team. He played an important role in helping the Moroccan team win the title in the Under-20 World Cup held in Chile last year.
After becoming the coach in September 2022, Regragui’s record was excellent. During his tenure, Morocco recorded 36 wins in 49 matches, 8 matches were drawn and only 5 losses. Meanwhile, the team also created a world record for most consecutive wins among national teams by registering 19 consecutive wins between June 2024 and December 2024.
It is being told that Regragui wanted to resign only after the defeat in the controversial final of the Nations Cup in January. After taking charge of the team for almost four years, he was very tired mentally and physically. However, the Moroccan Football Association requested him to remain in office until a new coach was selected.
The Moroccan team will play two international friendly matches this month. The team will face Ecuador in Madrid on March 27, while four days later they will face Paraguay in Lens, France.
Morocco have been drawn in Group C along with Brazil, Scotland and Haiti at the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026.
Morocco captain Ashraf Hakimi thanked Regragui on social media, saying his leadership, passion and vision inspired the players as well as fans throughout the country and around the world.
