Selena Gomez recently opened up about living with bipolar disorder and how her husband, music producer Benny Blanco, has supported her through the ups and downs. The singer spoke about her journey during the March 3 episode of the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, where she joined Benny, his friend Lil Dicky and Lil Dicky’s wife, Kristin Batalucco, for a candid conversation about mental health. During the discussion, Selena reflected on how complicated the road to her diagnosis had been and how understanding the condition has helped her manage it better today.

Selena first revealed publicly in 2020 that she had bipolar disorder. She shared the news during a conversation on Miley Cyrus’ Bright Minded series. At the time, she explained that after struggling for years and meeting several therapists, she eventually sought help at McLean Hospital in the United States, where doctors confirmed the diagnosis.
She later said learning the truth about her mental health actually brought her relief. Once she understood what she was dealing with, it stopped feeling so frightening and helped her take control of her treatment and lifestyle.
On the podcast, Selena described the process of getting diagnosed as confusing and emotionally exhausting, explaining that it took time, different opinions and professional help before things finally made sense.
Benny Blanco On Recognising Selena Gomez’s ManiaDuring the conversation, Benny Blanco shared how he has learned to recognise certain signs when Selena experiences manic episodes. He explained that sometimes she might not realise what’s happening at the moment, and only understands it later.
According to Benny, bipolar disorder requires a lot of sensitivity because it’s not always easy to address these moments directly when they’re happening. He added that Selena has become very aware of her mental health over time and often notices the early signs herself, sometimes telling him she feels like a manic phase might be starting.

Selena Says She Is Not AshamedSelena also made it clear that she does not feel embarrassed about experiencing manic episodes. Instead, she sees awareness as a positive step in managing the condition. She explained that recognising those moments early helps her handle them better. Being open about it, she said, allows her to understand herself more and take care of her mental health.
The singer also spoke about how important Benny’s support has been. She shared that having a partner who understands what she is going through and responds with patience makes a huge difference. According to Selena, Benny often senses how she is feeling and meets her with empathy rather than pressure. Over time, this has helped both of them understand the condition better and deal with difficult moments together.
