New Delhi: Sanju Samson’s whirlwind 89 propelled India to 253 for seven against England in the semi-final in Mumbai on Thursday, the highest team total in a knockout match in tournament history.
India surpassed West Indies’ 205 for four against Australia in the semi-final of the 2012 edition.
Samson’s 42-ball 89 after India were sent into bat was punctuated with seven sixes and eight fours.
His top-of-the-order knock was amply supported by Shivam Dube (43), Ishan Kishan (39), Hardik Pandya (27) and Tilak Varma (21) as England were to toil on a flat Wankhede Stadium pitch.
Will Jacks (2/40) and Adil Rashid (2/41) claimed two wickets each for England but it was a disappointing show overall for them.
Brief scores: India: 253 for seven in 20 overs (Sanju Samson 89, Shivam Dube 43, Ishan Kishan 39; Will Jacks 2/40, Adil Rashid 2/41).
