Barcelona and Marcus Rashford are yet to reach an agreement over a permanent transfer from Manchester United, despite recent claims from Spanish media. The 28-year-old has shone during his loan stint at the Catalan club and could make the move this summer.

However, BBC Sport have reported that no deal has been struck as yet, stating that whilst negotiations have begun over activating the £26million buy-option included in his loan deal, nothing has been finalised. It has been further noted that additional talks will be necessary, with Rashford still having two years remaining on his £325,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford.

Reports from Spanish publication Sporthad suggested a transfer had been agreed, claiming the England international would be prepared to take a wage cut and forfeit certain bonuses. A three-year deal was said to have been on offer for Rashford.

However, those reports seem to be premature. Barcelona continue to face significant financial difficulties, meaning Rashford would likely need to accept reduced wages should he join the club on a permanent basis beyond his temporary arrangement.

Barca are also considering a striker signing as their headline transfer this summer, as they look to secure a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski.

Currently sidelined through injury, Lewandowski's absence handed Rashford a central role during Wednesday's Copa Del Rey semi-final second leg against Atletico Madrid. He came on for Ferran Torres in the 65th minute with Barca 2-0 up on the night but 4-2 down on aggregate, following a dismal first leg defeat to Diego Simeone's side.

Barcelona netted a third whilst Rashford was on the pitch, and he did create an opening, but his side couldn't find the crucial fourth goal, allowing Atletico to progress to the final.

Rashford has struggled for regular game time in recent weeks, with both Raphinha and Lamine Yamal back fit and available for selection.

Nevertheless, his reaction to featuring more as a substitute than a starter has been exemplary, as Barca boss Hansi Flick confirmed. Back in December, he said: "I try to speak to every player when they are not selected.

"The last time I checked with him he replied me 'boss, you don't have to tell me about your decisions. The most important thing is the team. We have to win the three points. The rest is not that important'. This is the perfect mentality. I am so happy to have him."

Flick appears thoroughly convinced by Rashford, yet the final decision may ultimately be beyond his control, with reports suggesting Michael Carrick would welcome the forward back at Old Trafford. Given everything that's occurred over recent years, that scenario actually materialising seems rather improbable.

Carrick himself remained non-committal when questioned about Rashford's potential return earlier this season. He said in February: "It's difficult to say, because circumstances at certain times that I have not been involved in.

"It's difficult for me to comment really. I think the fact he's come through the academy and had such a big impact here is a positive, and as a club, he's had some really big moments and good moments.

"And I've shared some with him in the past. So, football throws up certain things, and obviously certain players. You can't stay here forever, and things happen, that's how it is."
