Friends, in today’s modern era, WhatsApp is the most popular app of instant messaging, which has more than 4 billion users all over the world, the company brings new features for these users, WhatsApp is preparing to bring a big change for the users in India. Under the new telecom cybersecurity rules brought in by the government, the platform is reportedly developing a feature called SIM binding. Let us know about it and how it works-



What is SIM binding feature of WhatsApp?


WhatsApp is working on a system that will verify whether the SIM card registered to an account is physically present in the user’s smartphone or not.


The app will show users a pop-up informing them that SIM verification is required under Indian regulations.


This feature has been spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.8.6.


It is currently in development and may take time to be released to all users.


This system will be applicable exclusively to accounts registered with Indian (+91) phone numbers.


Why is this change being brought about?


This step has been taken following a directive issued by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in November 2025.

What happens if SIM verification fails?


Reports suggest that WhatsApp will verify the SIM from time to time during account session renewal.

Access to the app may be blocked.


However, users’ previous chats are expected to remain safe.


Difficulty in using WhatsApp if SIM gets damaged or lost

Problems while traveling abroad


Access problems due to network shutdown


Critics say that the purpose of the rule is to improve cyber security, but it may cause problems to end users.


When will it launch?


As of now, WhatsApp has not announced the official rollout date. Since this feature is still in development, it may take time to reach the common people.
