New Delhi: Supabase, an open source backend platform used by developers worldwide, says its main domain supabase.co has been blocked across major Indian internet service providers. The company has publicly reached out to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on X, seeking clarity and a discussion with his team. The incident started on February 24, as per the Supabase status website.

The block appears to affect users on Jio, Airtel, and ACT Fibernet. Supabase says millions of developers globally use its tools and that “millions of users in India are currently unable to access our platform due to these blocks.” As of now, there has been no public response from the Minister or the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Supabase flags block, seeks urgent dialogue

In its post tagging the Minister, Supabase wrote, “We have recently become aware that the domain http://supabase.co is inaccessible to users across multiple Indian ISPs, including Jio, Airtel, and ACT Fibernet, due to a ministry order. Supabase is used by millions of developers worldwide, and millions of users in India are currently unable to access our platform due to these blocks. Could we talk to someone in your team about this?”

The company says it does not know the exact grounds of the blocking order. Unlike social media platforms, Supabase is primarily a backend tool used by engineers to manage databases, authentication, storage, and real time data for apps.

For context, Supabase is a serverless open source backend platform built on PostgreSQL. It offers a managed SQL database, built-in authentication, real-time updates through WebSockets, storage, and edge functions. Developers often compare it with Google’s Firebase, which uses NoSQL databases like Realtime Database and Cloud Firestore.

Timeline of events so far

Supabase first flagged connectivity complaints on February 24, 2026 at 14:46 UTC, saying it was investigating reports of customers struggling to connect from AP South 1, including several from India. By 15:13 UTC, the company identified a DNS resolution issue, noting that certain ISP DNS servers appeared unavailable and suggesting users try alternatives like Cloudflare 1.1.1.1. Later that day, at 16:00 UTC and 16:08 UTC, Supabase confirmed projects remained accessible outside India and began focusing on a possible ISP level block within the country.

On February 25 at 18:27 UTC, Supabase said it was continuing to work with ISPs and advised users to report the issue directly. By February 26, updates at 14:56 UTC and 23:36 UTC indicated that more Indian ISPs might be affected, and the company recommended alternative DNS providers, VPN use, or proxying custom domains as temporary workarounds while it engaged with multiple entities in India.

Developers react online

The block has triggered strong reactions from Indian developers on X and Reddit. One developer wrote, “When infrastructure platforms are blocked without understanding downstream impact, it’s not just companies that suffer it’s builders, founders and users across the country. India can’t aim to be a global tech powerhouse while pulling the ground from under its own developers.”

Another user posted, “It is really sad to see that there was no technical oversight regarding how this might affect customers using these services in India, and now we all have to suffer the consequences.”

A third comment read, “On no!! Not sure what happened but Supabase is one of the most popular databases out there. I hope they will resolve it soon.”

Yet another developer said, “This is really unexpected. We pay millions in taxes, yet critical platforms like Supabase get blocked without proper notice or explanation. A huge number of Indian SaaS products depend on it. This hurts builders, startups, and users alike.”

I spoke to a startup founder in Bengaluru who relies on Supabase for production apps. He said even a few hours of downtime can disrupt paying customers. For early-stage SaaS firms, backend access is not optional. It is core infrastructure.

At this point, it remains unclear why the entire domain has been blocked and whether the order targets specific content or services.
