A much-loved Channel 5 detective drama hailed as "better than Vera" has at last unveiled its trailer ahead of series two's arrival.

Ellis, starring Sharon D. Clarke as DCI Ellis, returns on March 10 and March 11, with the first-look trailer offering a glimpse of what's in store for viewers.

The crime series follows DCI Ellis and her colleague DS Harper, portrayed by Andrew Gower, as they solve a range of fresh cases across towns in northern England. The debut series aired in November 2024 and enjoyed tremendous success.

The synopsis for series two reveals: "Fresh from her victories in series one, DCI Ellis is once again parachuted into failing cases across the north of England.

"With Harper at her side, she faces a new wave of fractured communities and suspicious deaths that test not only her forensic brilliance but her resilience," reports the Mirror.

"The series takes them from a rural village, where the suspicious death of a beloved community leader exposes long-nursed resentments, to the industrial shadow of a stone works, where the death of a young woman reveals a hidden network of coercion and exploitation. Every case peels back layers of silence, ambition, and betrayal."

The trailer opens with DCI Ellis saying, "How to kill a man and get away with it."

She adds, "It's all about hiding it in plain sight. It's a Godfather move, don't tell me you've not seen The Godfather?"

"There's always a trail," the detective continues. "A young woman has been killed."

The trailer ends with DCI Ellis declaring, "Ambition and obsession, corrupting everything around you. We make choices, and when things don't go to plan, you do whatever it takes to fix them.

"This is a murder investigation, and I am going to do whatever it takes to solve it," she adds.

One viewer hailed the drama the "best show since Vera. They wrote, "It's not predictable. The show has subject manner that you don't see in other shows.

"We like the challenge of trying to guess who the killer is. There's usually some unexpected twists and turns that are surprising."
