Toll Plazas New Rule: If you've been paying cash at toll plazas while traveling on highways, this method is about to change. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to completely phase out cash toll collection on national highways and expressways from April 1, 2026. This means that only digital payments will be accepted at toll plazas in the future. Let's explore this in detail:

What will the new rule be?

According to the proposal, cash lanes will be eliminated on national highways across the country from April 2026. Only two methods will be accepted for toll payment: FASTag and UPI. This means that drivers arriving at toll plazas with cash may face difficulties. This move is considered a major step towards implementing a fully digital tolling system in the country. The government aims to ensure seamless and time-saving traffic at toll plazas.

FASTag Already Leading

According to NHAI, more than 98 percent of vehicles in the country have FASTag installed. Based on RFID technology, FASTag allows vehicles to cross toll plazas without stopping. This has reduced long queues and made travel easier than before.

Many toll plazas now offer UPI payment options. This means that even those without a FASTag can pay digitally.

What are the current regulations?

Currently, if a vehicle lacks a valid FASTag and pays with cash, it has to pay double the toll. However, UPI charges 1.25 times the fee. The government is already promoting digital payments.

Why is this decision being taken?

Cash payments often lead to long queues at toll plazas, especially during busy times. Cash transactions take more time and sometimes lead to disputes. The implementation of the digital system will improve traffic flow and reduce toll plaza time.

How many toll plazas will be included?

If the plan is approved, more than 1,150 toll plazas across the country will operate entirely digitally.

So, if your vehicle doesn't have a FASTag or it's not working properly, get it updated in time. Digital preparedness will be essential for highway travel in the future.
