Before the visit of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to India, there are signs of softening in the relations between the two countries. A change in the diplomatic stance of Ottawa is clearly visible, where Canada is now moving towards giving priority to trade and economic cooperation with India.
In the last few years, relations between the two countries had soured due to tension and accusations, but now efforts to improve the situation have intensified. Canadian officials say that constructive talks are going on with India at many levels and a positive environment is being created to strengthen the economic partnership. A senior official said that sensitive issues like foreign interference with India were also discussed in a serious and mature manner. He also said that Canada has developed a strong mechanism to protect its democratic system, so that external interference can be prevented.
According to reports, the Canadian government has clarified that if they had found concrete evidence of any kind of active interference from India, then this visit of the Prime Minister would not have been possible. Officials said that there have been regular dialogues between the two countries at the ministerial level, senior officials and top leadership level, which has laid a strong foundation for further talks.
Another Canadian official also said that Canada takes any foreign interference in its internal affairs seriously and does not accept it. He also stressed that it is not appropriate to link the violent crimes taking place in Canada with India. This statement has come at a time when Prime Minister Carney has arrived on a visit to India, which is being seen as an important step in improving relations between the two countries.
Trade relations between the Narendra Modi-led Indian government and Canada are already strong. Currently India is Canada’s seventh largest trading partner. The annual trade in goods and services between the two countries is more than $21 billion, which shows the depth of economic cooperation.
Carney’s visit to India is part of a broader tour of the Indo-Pacific region. The main objective of this visit is to further strengthen trade relations, explore new investment opportunities and give a new direction to relations after previous disputes. Experts believe that this visit can take the economic and diplomatic cooperation between India and Canada to a new level.
