Karnataka High Court On Ranveer Singh’s Kantara Controversy

On Tuesday, Justice M Nagaprasanna firmly stated that celebrity status does not give anyone the freedom to mock religious beliefs. The judge was stern in his remarks, stating that he may be Ranveer Singh or anybody. He can’t be loose-tongued at all. However, it was pointed out that as an actor with influence over many people, responsibility is expected. It was also stated that when speaking about a deity, proper understanding and research should be ensured, and such a figure cannot be referred to as a ghost. The court observed that religious sentiments cannot be hurt. Although an apology has been issued by Ranveer Singh, it was noted that spoken words cannot simply be erased, especially in the digital age, where content remains accessible.

The judge further noted that Rishab Shetty was performing as a deity, Goddess Chamundy. Referring to the act as a female ghost and mimicking Rishab Shetty, the court said, could hurt religious sentiments. The message from the bench was clear. Public figures are expected to exercise restraint in matters of faith.
