Manchester United are set to make several crucial decisions this summer. The club are chasing a Champions League spot in the Premier League but also face some off-field choices that will dictate how the club fare next term.

The positive start that interim manager Michael Carrick has made at Old Trafford has ensured that United are in the race for the top four. The club only have their next 11 league games to focus on as they target a return to Europe’s top competition.

Carrick will hope to use the remaining games to convince the United hierarchy to give him the manager’s job on a more permanent basis. Several coaches have been linked with the vacancy but the club icon could make the role his own.

It has been claimed that Zinedine Zidane is closing in on a return to management, while Carrick has outlined one of the challenges that United will face in the summer. Here, Mirror Football takes a look at some of the news surrounding Old Trafford.

Zinedine Zidane ‘agrees’ next job

Zinedine Zidane has been linked with the Manchester United job on numerous occasions since stepping down as Real Madrid manager. The 53-year-old won three Champions Leagues and two La Liga titles across two spells in charge of Los Blancos but has been out of work since stepping down in 2021.

The Manchester Evening News has reported that Zidane has reached a verbal agreement to become France manager after this summer’s World Cup. Current head coach Didier Deschamps is scheduled to reach the end of his contract following the tournament.

Zidane has not been linked with the United job since Carrick’s appointment as interim boss. However, the reported update boosts Carrick’s chances of keeping his role at Old Trafford, with a high-profile coach ruling himself out of the running for the job.

Michael Carrick transfer warning

Michael Carrick has outlined that Manchester United are set to lose a pivotal player in the next transfer window. It follows the announcement that Casemiro will be leaving the club at the end of his contract, despite the experienced defensive midfielder enjoying a return to form this season, and he could prove difficult to replace.

"Yeah, well, listen, it's an important position, I think," The United boss said. "Not being biased, obviously, as being a midfielder, but I think it is an important position to try and tie everything together.

"You’re connected to the whole team, and that's sometimes emotionally, a little bit mentally, and showing that composure and understanding of the game a little bit. And Case’s has had a big influence within the group on that."
