Dehradun: The weather in Uttarakhand has taken a sharp turn, bringing rain and snowfall to the hilly districts while leaving the plains largely dry.
According to the Meteorological Department, light rain is expected in Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh today, with snowfall possible in areas above 3,000 meters. Meanwhile, the plains and lower regions will continue to experience dry conditions, with temperatures rising slightly.
On Sunday, higher reaches of Chamoli district, including Badrinath Dham, Hemkund Sahib, Rudranath, Kali Mati, Niti, and Mana valleys, received fresh snowfall. The lower areas such as Gopeshwar witnessed rain accompanied by hailstorm, which brought back the chill. Light showers were also recorded in Nanda Nagar, Nandprayag, Jyotirmath, Pokhari, and Pipalkoti. These weather changes caused temperatures to drop, and cold winds made the conditions harsher for residents and travelers.
The return of snow has once again covered the high-altitude religious sites and trekking routes, created scenic views but also adding challenges for movement. Local communities reported that the sudden change in weather has affected daily routines, especially in villages dependent on outdoor work.
In contrast, the plains of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, Haridwar, and Udham Singh Nagar, remained sunny throughout the day. Clouds appeared intermittently but did not bring rain. The Meteorological Center noted that temperatures in these regions stayed slightly above normal, offering relief from the biting cold felt in the hills.
On Monday, Dehradun experienced a bright morning, and the warmth continued through the day. This difference between the plains and the hills highlights the diverse climatic conditions across the state.
The Meteorological Department has predicted that the spell of rain and snowfall will end soon. From February 25 onward, the weather is expected to remain dry and clear across Uttarakhand. Cold winds may continue in the mountainous regions, but the plains are likely to see temperatures staying above normal.
This forecast brings hope for smoother travel and daily activities, especially in areas where rain and snow disrupted routines. Farmers and villagers in the plains are expected to benefit from the dry spell, while those in the hills will continue to adapt to the colder conditions.
