A specialist has cautioned that particular indicators in your day-to-day routine might signal high blood sugar levels, potentially leading to type 2 diabetes. Cassandra Barns, a nutritionist and fitness instructor, has identified a range of symptoms that could point towards raised blood sugar levels.

Diabetes UK estimated that over 5.6 million people across the UK are living with diabetes. Its figures revealed 4.4 million people in the UK have diabetes. Additionally, 1.2 million people may be living with type 2 diabetes without knowing it.

NHS England explained that more than half a million people (549,000) additional individuals in England have been flagged by the NHS as being at risk of developing type 2 diabetes within a year. The Diabetes and Wellness Foundation explained that nine in every ten people with diabetes in the UK have type 2, which is frequently preventable.

Type 2 diabetes can increase your chances of suffering from numerous severe health complications, including difficulties with your eyes, heart, and nerves, the NHS warned. This variant of diabetes is commonly linked with being overweight or sedentary, or having relatives with the condition, reports Surrey Live.

Cassandra pointed out some initial warning signs of the illness you might spot in everyday situations. She explained: "It's important to say that none of these individual signs mean you definitely have high blood sugar, but they are indications that it's worth seeing your doctor, who will run some tests if necessary."

These are the warning signs that might indicate your blood sugar levels are slightly elevated, according to the Daily Record.

1. Experiencing fatigue

Cassandra explained: "Of course, feeling tired can have many causes! But it can be an indication that your body is not efficiently taking glucose (sugar) into your cells to use for energy, meaning your blood sugar stays high."

2. Experiencing unusual thirst

She also pointed to other indicators such as abnormal thirst, noting: "When your blood sugar levels are high, water is pulled out of your cells into your bloodstream to dilute the sugar. So, you may feel very thirsty even if you're drinking plenty of water... and may have to pee a lot."

3. Experiencing intense hunger

Additionally, she described excessive appetite: "Just like tiredness signals, you'll get hunger signals if glucose is staying in the blood and not being taken into your cells. Your body thinks it's because you haven't eaten!".

4. Abdominal weight gain

Cassandra noted that extra weight around the midriff, commonly called a 'spare tyre', might suggest elevated blood sugar levels and represent a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

5. Thrush infections

She also cautioned about thrush, stating: "High blood sugar levels can change the bacterial balance in vaginal fluids and encourage the growth of candida, leading to thrush."
