According to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), if your home is within 20 kilometers of a toll plaza, you can qualify for a toll exemption. This requires proof of local residency, such as an Aadhaar card, voter ID, or electricity bill. Under the "More Distance, More Toll" policy, which will be implemented in September 2024, vehicles tracked using GNSS technology will be exempt from toll for travel up to 20 kilometers. The National Highway Fee Rules were amended to allow this.

Monthly Pass Available for ₹340

Another perk is available for residents living near toll plazas. Those living within 20 kilometers of a toll plaza can obtain a monthly pass for ₹340. This pass is valid for only one toll plaza and allows unlimited travel for a month. To obtain the pass, you must submit your RC, proof of address, a FASTag, and a photo, if required. Once the application is approved, the FASTag is updated or a pass is issued. It's worth noting that this feature isn't applicable to commercial vehicles and requires monthly updates.

Which vehicles are exempt from tolls?

In addition to residents living within a 20-kilometer radius of a toll plaza, vehicles associated with certain government and emergency services are also exempt from tolls. These include central and state government official vehicles, police, ambulances, fire brigades, the Navy, the Air Force, and relief and rescue vehicles under the National Disaster Response Force. At most toll plazas in the country, two-wheelers are exempt from tolls because bikes and scooters have less road weight. Therefore, FASTags are not mandatory for these vehicles.
