The University Grants Commission has identified a total of 32 fake universities in 12 states across the country, raising serious questions over the safety of students and the credibility of higher education. In recent figures, the number of these unauthorized institutions has increased from 20 to 32 in the last two years, which clearly highlights the growing network of fake universities.

UGC has directly requested the students and parents to be cautious and not take admission in these institutions. These fake universities are not recognized under the UGC Act and have no authority to award valid degrees.

Growing threat of fake universities in new states

New states like Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Arunachal Pradesh have joined the list of fake universities, where one fake institute each has been found.

most fake university

The number of fake universities is highest in the national capital Delhi, where a total of 12 institutions are running. These include names like All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences, Commercial University Limited, United Nations University, Vishwakarma Open University for Self-Employment and Institute of Management and Engineering. Some of these institutions are located close to regulatory offices, raising questions about monitoring and enforcement.

Situation in other states

Many fake universities are also active in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. There are several institutes in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, among which Prayag’s Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth and the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine are prominent. Magic and Art University in Faridabad, Haryana has been included in the list, while Daksha University in Ranchi, Jharkhand has been marked.

Warning on Global Human Peace University of Bengaluru

The Commission has issued a special alert regarding the institute running by the name Global Human Peace University in Bengaluru. This institute is not authorized to work as a university at all.

Strategies to mislead students

The UGC said that these institutions mislead students and award degrees without permission, putting their educational and career prospects at risk. Education experts say that fake universities often promise quick degrees, low fees or flexible courses to attract students. These do not have proper infrastructure, faculty or academic standards. The problem has worsened in recent years, with some fake institutions calling themselves foreign universities or claiming international collaboration. This has made it difficult for students to identify the right institutions.

Serious consequences of fake degrees

The degrees issued by these fake universities are not valid for jobs, higher education or government services. As the admission process begins, the UGC has reiterated its warning and urged students to check the affiliation of the university before enrolling. The Commission said that awareness is the strongest protection against fake universities, which are targeting students across the country. UGC regularly releases the list of fake universities on its website so that the public can get correct information. Yet, despite repeated alerts, these institutions are continuing to operate.
