It is important to remember that the director had been thinking about casting Tamil actor Vikram and Bollywood sensation Ranveer Singhin the major role. It is a well-known fact that S. Shankar had been planning to make Velpari for a long time. The film will be based on the historical novel Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Pari, which was penned by the renowned Tamil author Su Venkatesan.
For those who don’t know, Velpari was a famous Tamil monarch who was recognised for his bravery and ability to run things as well as for his kindness and generosity. The well-known saying Mullaikku Theru Koduthaan Pari comes from a poem that praises Pari, who is said to have given his own chariot to prevent a jasmine bush from wilting and dying. People in Tamil Nadu still use this saying a lot. There is a lot of Tamil literature on Pari, who is one of the last seven philanthropists.
News 18 reports that Shankar said during a speech about Velpari that he intended to read Veera Yuga Nayagan Vel Pari amid the lockdown caused by COVID. But Shankar said he couldn’t find even one copy of the book. Finally, the ace filmmaker said that director Vasanthabalan got in touch with writer Su Venkatesan directly to get a copy of the book.
Shankar mentioned that at the ceremony, writer Su Venkatesan gave him a personal copy to read. He then spoke for a long time about how impressed he was by the novel’s depth. He went on saying about how much he learnt about a monarch who ruled 2000 years ago, according to a News 18 article.
