Heart failure affects over a million adults across the UK, yet many remain unaware of the warning signs. Despite what the name suggests, heart failure doesn't mean your heart has stopped functioning, but rather that this crucial organ requires assistance to work more effectively.

It's a chronic condition that typically deteriorates with time, and while it's most prevalent among the elderly, it can strike at any age. There's no cure available, but with appropriate treatment, symptoms can be controlled for several years, according to NHS guidance.

Conditions that may trigger heart failure include coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, conditions impacting the heart muscle, congenital heart disease, heart rhythm disturbances, and damage to the heart valves. Typical heart failure symptoms include swollen ankles or legs, shortness of breath following activity or while resting, persistent exhaustion, and dizziness and/or passing out.

There's also a less well-known symptom that can appear in a person's fingernails. Called Terry's nail, the fingernail becomes white, with a pink stripe along the top.

Beyond being an indicator for heart failure, it can also stem from liver complications or diabetes. You should consult a GP if you experience any persistent or progressively worsening symptoms of heart failure, reports Surrey Live.

If you develop sudden or extremely severe symptoms, dial 999 or head to your nearest A&E department.
