Holi is a festival of colors and enthusiasm, but the eight days preceding it are considered special. These days are called Holashtak. According to tradition, this time is not considered suitable for auspicious works. In the year 2026, Holashtak will start from 25th February till 3rd March, i.e. till the day of Holika Dahan. It is believed that restraint, meditation and caution are necessary during these days.
‘Holashtak’ is made up of two words – Holi and Ashtak, which means eight days. This period lasts from Phalgun Shukla Ashtami to Purnima. According to religious texts and astrology, there may be increased unrest and instability in the environment during these days. Therefore, it is advised to postpone auspicious activities like marriage, housewarming, tonsure or starting a new business.

According to astrology, during the eight days of Holashtak, eight major planets are considered effective on different dates. The position of these planets is considered aggressive, which can increase mental stress or instability. There is a belief that when the planets are not favourable, then the success of any new work can be hindered. Therefore, it is advised to be patient and avoid major decisions at this time. This period is considered suitable for keeping the mind calm and introspecting.
Reason to the story of devotee Prahlad
A mythological story is also told behind considering Holashtak as inauspicious. It is said that demon king Hiranyakashyap had tortured his son Prahlad from Phalgun Shukla Ashtami to Purnima to make him leave the devotion of Lord Vishnu. During these eight days, Prahlad endured many tortures, but he did not give up his devotion. Finally, Holika Dahan took place on the full moon day and Prahlad was saved. Due to this incident, these eight days are considered a time of suffering and testing. The atmosphere after the full moon is considered auspicious and auspicious.
What to do and what not to do during this period
It is advised to stay away from Tamasic food and intoxicants during Holashtak. Anger and haste should be avoided. This time is considered good for worship, recitation, chanting mantras and charity. Chanting “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya” or reciting Hanuman Chalisa is considered to give mental peace. Meditation and sadhana strengthen the mind and reduce negativity.
