Manchester United are said to have decided against triggering an option in Jadon Sancho's contract which may have helped them secure a transfer fee for the out of favour attacker.

Sancho, 25, joined the Red Devils back in the summer of 2021 from Borussia Dortmund in a deal worth £73million in total. Unfortunately, though, his time at Old Trafford has been a challenging one, with his last Premier League appearance for the club coming more than two years ago.

After spending the last two campaigns away from the club on loan, Sancho was always expected to depart Manchester United on a permanent basis this summer.

And that will now happen with The Sun claiming United are ready to release Sancho as a free agent rather than triggering an option in the player's contract to try and help facilitate a sale.

The report adds that the rationale behind United's decision is that by releasing him, they will avoid the risk of having to pay his £200,000-a-week wages for another year. This comes off the back of Sancho failing to secure a permanent move away last summer.

He had seemed poised to join Chelsea after joining them on loan with an obligation to make the move permanent for £25m. But after Sancho failed to agree terms with the Blues, they instead paid a penalty fee and the player returned to United, who subsequently loaned him out again to Aston Villa.

An option to make Sancho's move to Villa Park permanent was included in the deal that was thrashed out between United and the Midlands outfit last summer. But with Sancho starting just six of Villa's 20 Premier League games so far this term, it seems unlikely it will be triggered.

Casemiro and Marcus Rashford are expected to follow Sancho out of Old Trafford this summer with the former already confirming he will move on at the end of his contract.

Rashford joined Barcelona on loan with a permanent option which is expected to be triggered, though it's been claimed United will not entertain any attempts from Barcelona to try and push the pre-agreed transfer fee down.
