Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif strongly criticised Australia after their shocking exit from the T20 World Cup 2026. He pointed to their performances in the last three ICC tournaments and claimed the team has declined since lifting the 2023 ODI World Cup title.

Australia crashed out in the Super Eight stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup, lost the semi-final of the 2025 Champions Trophy, and fell short in the final of the 2025 World Test Championship. Kaif used these results to support his view that Australia’s recent ICC record shows a clear dip.

He also said that Hardik Pandya’s presence could have changed the result of the 2023 ODI World Cup final against India. Kaif explained that Australia would have faced stronger competition because Pandya was the most important player in that match.

Hardik sustained an ankle injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup match against Bangladesh which caused him to miss the remaining tournament matches. The Indian team experienced difficulties during the knockout matches because they lacked the essential seam-bowling all-rounder skills which he provided to the team.

The Australian cricket team has experienced multiple unsuccessful seasons since they won the T20 World Cup championship in 2021. The team suffered multiple disappointing results during their existing T20 World Cup 2026 season but their unexpected early elimination represents their most shocking outcome.

Australia started their tournament with a strong victory against Ireland. However Zimbabwe achieved a surprising victory by 23 runs which forced Australia to win their upcoming match against Sri Lanka on February 16. Australia began their batting innings successfully yet they could not achieve a strong finish which allowed Sri Lanka to win the match easily because Pathum Nissanka scored an unbroken century.

Rain canceled the Zimbabwe-Ireland match which officially ended Australia's tournament. Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe advanced from Group B to the Super Eight stage. In their next round match Zimbabwe will compete against West Indies India and South Africa.
