HBO’s latest Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, may have quietly nodded to one of the most loved characters from the original series. The show follows Dunk, played by Peter Claffey, a tall and strong hedge knight with a simple heart and a strong sense of right and wrong. For longtime viewers of Game of Thrones, that description instantly brings Brienne to mind. The possible connection in the latest episode only adds fuel to that idea.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Easter Egg On Brienne Of TarthIn the episode, there is a short flashback showing a young Dunk walking along the Kingsroad with his childhood friend Rafe as they head back toward King’s Landing. The Kingsroad, one of the longest roads in Westeros, links the capital to faraway regions across the continent.

Fans quickly pointed out that this same stretch of road was seen years later in Game of Thrones. In season five, Jaime Lannister sends Brienne of Tarth away from King’s Landing on a mission to find Sansa Stark. She travels the Kingsroad with Podrick Payne by her side. The wooded path looks almost identical to the one shown in Dunk’s flashback.

Showrunner Ira Parker later confirmed that this was done on purpose. Both scenes were filmed at the same location in Ireland. He shared that it is the exact same road, with the same trees, and that the team chose not to make the connection obvious. The idea was to reward dedicated fans who might notice the small detail.
What Is The Family Link Between Dunk and Brienne? The connection between Dunk and Brienne is not just visual. Author George R. R. Martin has previously confirmed that Brienne is a descendant of Dunk. While the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas do not show this part of his life yet, it is hinted that Dunk eventually had ties with House Tarth.
In Martin’s book A Feast for Crows, Brienne remembers seeing a shield bearing Dunk’s sigil in her father’s armoury. That detail strongly suggests a family link between the two warriors.
About The SeriesA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, created by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin, is set about a century before the events of Game of Thrones. It is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg stories and stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Aegon “Egg” Targaryen.
The show premiered in January 2026 and has already been renewed for a second season, expected in 2027. With subtle nods like this, it continues to deepen the rich history of Westeros for fans old and new.
