Tesco is recalling some of its fruit after discovering it was contaminated with salmonella. Salmonella is a bacterial infection that typically lives in animal and human intestines and is shed through faeces.

People become infected most frequently through contaminated food, unwashed produce or poor hygiene. Symptoms of infection usually show up anywhere from 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. They generally last about 4 to 7 days.

The product being recalled is Tesco Grape & Berry Medley in a 230g pack with a use by date of February 16 or February 17, 2026.

The various symptoms include:

• Digestive Distress: Stomach cramps, diarrhoea (which can sometimes be bloody), and nausea.




• General Malaise: Fever, chills, and headache.




• Dehydration: This is the biggest risk, especially for children and older adults, due to the fluid loss from diarrhoea and vomiting.

While most cases clear up on their own, you should seek medical attention if you experience:

• Symptoms lasting more than a few days.




• A high fever (over 39C).




• Signs of dehydration (dark urine, dry mouth, or dizziness).




• Blood in your stool.

The Food Standards Agency said: "Symptoms caused by Salmonella usually include fever, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should stay away from work, school or nursery until you have stopped having symptoms for at least 48 hours to avoid passing it on to others."

If there is a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold, then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). The FSA issues Product Recall Information Notices to let consumers and local authorities know about problems associated with food. In some cases, a 'Food Alert for Action' is issued. This provides local authorities with details of specific action to be taken on behalf of consumers.
