T20 World Cup 2026: Mitchell Marsh-led Australia has been knocked out from the Super 8 race after the Group B fixture between Zimbabwe and Ireland was washed out due to rain. Meanwhile Zimbabwe have secured aspot in the Super 8 spot for the first time in T20 World Cup history.
The Aussies had a disappointing campaign in T20 World Cup 2026 as they lost two of its three group-stage games. Australia suffered a embarrassing eight-wicket defeat to Sri Lanka on Monday while they also lost to Zimbabwe last week.
Australia miss Super 8 for the first time since 2009
This is only the second time Australia have failed to qualify for the Super 8 in a T20 World Cup since 2009.
Zimbabwe became the seventh team to secure a Super 8 spot in the T20 World Cup after their clash against Ireland was washed out due to rain which also knocked out former champions Australia and Ireland.
With both sides sharing a point Zimbabwe moved to five points which was enough to seal their Super 8 qualification. They are set to face India in their opening Super 8 fixture on February 26 in Chennai.
Zimbabwe will be placed in Group G1 alongside India
Zimbabwe will be placed in Group G1 alongside India South Africa and West Indies. They will play their final group match against co-hosts Sri Lanka on February 19.
Australia were stuck on two points after losing their Group B games against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe losing both of their remaining matches would have benefited the formed champions to keep their Super 8 hopes alive but continuous rain dashed those chances.
With steady rain and a damp outfield at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium the match was eventually called off confirming Zimbabwes place in the Super 8 stage.
