Manchester United are still on the hunt for a permanent replacement for Ruben Amorim in the summer, despite Michael Carrick's promising start. However, Carlo Ancelotti has already taken himself out of contention and Thomas Tuchel also committed his future to England.

Carrick has stepped into thehot seat as caretaker manager following Amorim's sacking last month and has been impressive. While he could be offered the role full-time in the summer if his good form continues, other candidates are being considered.

Tuchel was one name in the frame but he put pen to paper on a new contract with the Three Lions on Thursday. This agreement is set to see him remain at the helm until the conclusion of Euro 2028.

Current Brazil boss Ancelotti, who is also expected to sign a contract extension in the coming weeks, was another name supposedly on United's radar. However, regardless of any forthcoming national team deal, the Italian effectively ruled out a return to club management last year, barring one specific team.

Speaking to L'Equipe in September 2025, Ancelotti was asked about a potential return to club football. He was clear in his response, naming just one European side he'd ever contemplate managing in the future.

"Real Madrid is the only team I will accept managing after Brazil," Ancelotti said. This statement, coupled with the rumours of his impending contract extension, effectively rules out any chance of him taking over at United.

The question of who will lead the club beyond this season remains unanswered. However, since stepping in as interim manager in January, Carrick has yet to taste defeat.

He orchestrated a remarkable 2-0 win against arch-rivals Manchester City in his first game in charge. In following matches, his team beat Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham and left it late to secure a 1-1 draw with West Ham.

This unbeaten streak has naturally led to increased calls for Carrick's permanent appointment. Following the victory against Fulham, Carrick was questioned about any developments regarding his future. He said: "Nothing's changed, to be honest.

"I'm fully aware of the role I'm doing here and the responsibility I've got. We want to be successful, and I want the club to be successful beyond the end of the season - if that's me, if that's somebody else.

"At this stage, I can't control that and we'll see what happens, but it's certainly about trying to improve the team and making Manchester United stronger. Results over a short period of time don't change that. If they have changed there is something wrong.

"It can't be so knee-jerk whether it's really good or whether there's a few issues we need to solve."
