Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie have admitted they are just as emotional as fans over the tragic ending of Cathy and Heathcliff’s romance in Wuthering Heights.

The actors star in director Emerald Fennell’s reimagining of Wuthering Heights, which explores the devastating consequences of Cathy’s decision to end her illicit relationship with Heathcliff. The choice leads to profound emotional turmoil, ultimately pushing Cathy into a mental breakdown and deep melancholy.

Robbie described how the film closely follows the novel’s darker psychological themes, particularly Cathy’s illness and hallucinations.

“There’s quite a few moments of Cathy hallucinating, and she hallucinates seeing young Heathcliff in the garden,” Robbie explained. She added that she appreciated how the film preserved this section of the book. “Where Cathy’s sick, and she’s going to die, and she’s hallucinating, and she starts collecting all the bird feathers and going kind of crazy. So I liked that there was that section.”

The Barbie star revealed she was especially heartbroken by one particular scene that mirrors the characters’ childhood bond.

“What breaks my heart is when I was sitting on the bed, and little Heathcliff put his hand around Cathy’s ankle,” Robbie said. She noted that the moment echoes an early scene from their childhood, adding, “That honestly almost makes me cry even now.”

Elordi, who also stars in Frankenstein, agreed with Robbie’s reaction, calling the moment devastating. “In the screenplay, that was devastating,” he said.

“Devastating,” Robbie echoed. “The little hand holding her ankle.”

“I mean, it’s gut-wrenching, that moment,” she added. The emotional reflections from the cast highlight the enduring power of Brontë’s tragic love story and the intensity of Fennell’s dark cinematic interpretation.
