The best reason for celebrating Mahashivratri is given in Shivpuran itself. According to him, once Brahma and Vishnu started considering themselves superior. A dispute broke out between the two on this matter. Then a huge Jyotirlinga appeared there and a prophecy was made that 'whoever finds the tip of this Jyotirlinga will be the best.' Brahma and Vishnu separately started searching for the end of this Jyotirlinga but both failed in it. But to show himself superior, Brahmadev lied that he had found the tip of Jyotirlinga. Then Mahadev appeared there and said, 'This Jyotirlinga is my form. When Brahmadev lied, Mahadev cursed him not to be worshiped and declared Vishnu as the supreme god. The festival of Mahashivratri is celebrated because it appeared for the first time in the form of Jyotirlinga.
