FASTag users across the country need to be alert of a new cyber fraud. Fraudsters are now targeting people’s bank accounts and FASTag wallets through QR codes and fake messages. Motorists traveling on highways have been advised to take special care, as one wrong scan can lead to a huge amount of money being stolen in a matter of minutes.

How does FASTag QR code scam work?

Many people receive a message while traveling that their FASTag balance is about to be exhausted and if they are not recharged immediately, the tag may be blocked. A QR code or link is given in this message which is asked to scan or click.

As soon as the user scans that QR code, he is taken to a fake website that looks like the real FASTag portal. There vehicle number, FASTag ID, bank details and OTP are asked. After giving this information, the fraudsters withdraw money from the bank account or wallet.

In this type of fraud, criminals try to win people’s trust by using the names and logos of government institutions.

Fake QR codes are being installed near toll plaza

Now the swindlers are not only sending messages but are also placing fake QR codes around the toll plazas. These codes look like real instructions, so people scan them without checking.

Due to the widespread use of FASTag, this fraud is spreading rapidly and lakhs of vehicle owners are at risk.

How to identify fake FASTag website and link

It is very important to check any link before clicking on it. Genuine FASTag services are available only through authorized bank apps or official portals.

Fake websites often use names that look like real websites, but with small changes. Always check the website URL carefully.

Keep in mind that no bank or official institution ever asks for OTP, PIN or bank details through SMS, WhatsApp or call.

Important measures to avoid FASTag fraud

Use only official apps and portals: Always use authorized banks or official platforms for FASTag recharge.

Do not share OTP and personal information: Sharing OTP, PIN or bank information with anyone can be dangerous.

Use the original customer care number only: Always get the contact number from the official website only.

Keep SMS and bank alerts on: With this you will immediately get information about any suspicious transaction.

What to do immediately if you become a victim of fraud

If such fraud happens to you, then immediately contact your bank and get the account or FASTag blocked. Also file a complaint on the cyber crime portal and report to the nearest police station.

Caution is the best protection

The most important thing is to be alert to avoid FASTag scam. Do not scan any QR code without checking and avoid clicking on any suspicious links.

Only your awareness and vigilance can keep your money and personal information safe.
